What is Sonoma Mountain?
![]()
Sonoma Mountain Zen Center is a Zen center in Sonoma County whose resident teacher and abbot is Jakusho Kwong-roshi. The center was founded in 1974 in the rolling hills near Santa Rosa. The Zen center offers training for residents, members, and visitors. Kwong-roshi continues the Soto Zen lineage of Shunryu Suzuki-roshi, who was Kwong-roshi's teacher.
Kwong-roshi and his wife, Shinko, have been at Sonoma Mountain since the early seventies. They have created a wonderful place for practice and a center for residents and lay practitioners.

OK, so it's not really Buddhist, but I am also a practitioner of the martial art of Aikido. It has many connections to Buddhism, although its founder, O Sensei, was a practitioner of a Shinto offshoot. It is one of the many paths that lead me to Buddhism, and is a difficult, challenging, and beautiful art more philosophically aligned with T'ai Chi than karate.
